cARo _ LVS (inscribed in two lines, three globules aligned vertically in the middle and spaced from each other).

A - R _ DIS (inscribed in two lines separated by a medium-sized cross, the letter x or a Saint Andrew's cross between the letters A and R, one globule on the left, between the letters A and D, one globule between the middle cross and the letter S; one globule in the shape of a triangle between the cross of Saint Andrew and the letter R).

Photo of a coin sold by cgb.fr, link to the sale and their website: https://www.cgb.fr/charles-ier-dit-charlemagne-denier-sup,bca_355426,a.html. Type similar to that illustrated in old works, who hadn't noticed the triangle shaped globules.

We find these globules in the shape of a triangle on the obverse as on the reverse on other coins of the same type, so they are indeed intentional graphic elements.
