CONCORDIA AVGG (408 / 420)

Bust of Theodosius II facing, cuirassed, wearing helmet with crest and a pearl diadem. Holding a spear passing behind his head with the right hand and a decorated shield with the left hand. Shield decorated with a victory facing and holding a wreath in each hand.

Constantinopolis seated on a throne with her head to the right, holding a scepter with her right hand and a globe surmounted by a victory with her left hand. Her right foot placed on a prow.

Series with COMOB mark. Variant with shield decorated with a victory facing and holding a wreath in each hand.

I followed the weight of 4.45 grs given during the last sale by Classical Numismatic Group, while the old sales gave 4.44 grs. Considering that the scale was perhaps more accurate on this date.

I note that no coin that I could see has a jewel on the diadem. There are at least 3 obverse dies and same number of reverse dies. The coin sold the 10/03/2003 par Gorny & Mosch Giessener Münzhandlung, Auction 122, lot 2305, shares the same obverse die as the coin illustrated in the RIC X, plate 15, n°349 (sources given by the RIC X: London British Museum and Kunsthistorisches Museum of Vienna, the RIC X does not specify the provenance of the photo). The coin from Gorny & Mosch Giessener Münzhandlung shares the same reverse die as the coin sold in its sale of the 07/03/2011, Auction 96, lot 3052. The coin having a different obverse die from the other examples mentioned. We find the same two dies on the copy sold the 15/06/2006 by Classical Numismatic Group, Electronic Auction 135, lot 252. Finally, the copy sold on 02/04/2001 by Gorny & Mosch Giessener Münzhandlung, Auction 107, lot 627 has dies different from all the other coins mentioned.

These coins from this mint all seem to have a spear depicted without a tip.
