IMP M ANT GORDIANVS AFR AVG

Laureate, draped and cuirassed? bust of Gordian II Africanus to the right, seen from three quarters back.

P M TR P COS P P

The genius of the senate standing left, stretching out a branch with the right hand and holding a small scepter with the left hand.

Coin referenced RIC 4B, page 164, n°9. Source: Schulman, list 90, 201. To confirm. The RIC referenced this coin as a hybrid while noting: ''it might of course, be pleaded that these are regular coins and that Gordian II, like his father, actually held the offices mentioned in the reverse legend''. I consider this coin as official, especially since the discovery of two coins for the two emperors with the legend: IMP CAES M ANT GORDIA AFR AVG which proves a more recent issue than what we thought before. See Gordian I: AYC #7, RIC - and Gordian II: AYC #2, RIC -.

I noted the cuirass with ''?'' in the description of the reverse, because the RIC 4B questioned the presence of the cuirass. I did not note any legend break on the reverse, because i have not seen the cited copy (I contacted Schulman who no longer own this catalog).

Gordian I and II share the same obverse legend, the bust of Gordian II is distinguished by absence of hairs in front of his laurel wreath.
