Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Gordian II Africanus to the right, seen from three quarters back.
The genius of the senate standing left, stretching out a branch with the right hand and holding a small scepter with the left hand.
Coin referenced in the RIC 4B, page 164, n°10. Source: British museum, Museum number 1872,0709.831, link to the coin: https://www.britishmuseum.org/collection/object/C_1872-0709-831. Coin purchased from Rollin et Feu-ardent in 1872, ex collection Edward Wigan.
The RIC referenced this coin as a hybrid while noting: ''it might of course, be pleaded that these are regular coins and that Gordian II, like his father, actually held the offices mentioned in the reverse legend''. I consider this coin as official, especially since the discovery of two coins for the two emperors with the legend: IMP CAES M ANT GORDIA AFR AVG which proves a more recent issue than what we thought before. See Gordian I: AYC #7, RIC - and Gordian II: AYC #2, RIC -.
Gordian I and II share the same obverse legend, the bust of Gordian II is distinguished by absence of hairs in front of his laurel wreath.
