Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Gordian I Africanus to the right, seen from three quarters back.

ROMAE AETERNAE _ SC

Rome seated left on a shield and throne, holding a scepter with the left hand and a victory with the right hand. Victory holds a palm with the right hand and a crown with the left hand.

This is the only Gordian I coin of this type that I have seen. All the copies that I have been able to analyze in old catalogs, modern sales, books, etc. are in reality coins of Gordian II where we can clearly see that the hair is missing after the crown.

Gordian I and II share the same obverse legend, the bust of Gordian II is distinguished by absence of hairs in front of his laurel wreath.
