CAROLVS REX FR (circular legend around a cross surrounded by a circle made up of dots, a cross between FR and CAROLVS).

LVGDVNVM (circular legend around the Karolus monogram (3) surrounded by a circle made up of dots, a cross between the letters M and L).

One copy preserved at the Münzkabinett der Staatlichen Museen of Berlin, link to the page of their website showing the photo of the coin: http://www.smb-digital.de/eMuseumPlus?service=ExternalInterface&module=collection&objectId=2448607&viewType=detailView.

Warning: this coin is illustrated in old works but with the legend CARLVS REX FR .. it seems however that it is the same coin (form of blank, centering...), error? In addition, it may be that this coin is for Charles II The Bald who struck coins with the same legend CARLVS or also CAROLVS. Patrick Nouchy in his book ''Les Rois Carolingiens de Francie Occidentale'' de Pépin Le Bref à Louis V (751 - 987) page 132 atelier de Lyon n°34, takes back the two coins of Lyon for charlemagne and Charles II The Bald and says concerning Charles The Bald: ''Reprise de la frappe avec le coin du denier de Charlemagne dans l'atelier de Lyon''. Traduction: Recovery of striking with the die of Charlemagne's denarius in the Lyon mint.

Monograms Karolus:

(1) Without letter A in the diamond on the middle.

(2) With the letter A inscribed at the top in the diamond on the middle.

(3) With the letter A inscribed at the left in the diamond on the middle.
