Flavius Victor

  • Usurpator: 384 to 388.
  • Son of: Magnus Maximus.

Comment on estimates: Solidi are extremely rare! Even a coin in state Vg could reach ten thousand Euros or more. For Siliquae, without taking into account the rarity of the mint, the prices are around 1000 € in VF condition. Finally, the nummi are all close to 100 € in state VG, the market does not really take into account the scarcity of mints. All of Flavius Victor's coins are very rare or extremely rare.

Coin extremely rare! The last copy sold a little more than 40 000 € in XF state. I did not see any coin in higher condition go on sale. For lower states I performed a descending calculation from the value in XF. Considering the rarity of this coin, it is very difficult to make an accurate estimate, this kind of coin can, from one year to another reach even larger sums.

Weight and diameter information based on Silquae type VIRTVS ROMANORVM (AYC # 4) given the few copies available for this type VICTORIA AVGVSTORVM. Only two specimens with diameter information available, showed diameters around 15.00 mm. It is therefore more reasonable to think that, on average, Siliques of this type reach the same weights and diameters as the following type. Most common mint. If one finds coins in VF condition in prices a little lower than those realized for (for example) the mint of Trier. The coins for this mint of Mediolanum reach much higher prices form the state XF (up to 3000 € for a coin almost MS).

I note that the letter G of AVG on the obverse has a small ribbon coming out. Possibility that this coin is an imitation

Weight information from the only known copy, no information on the diameter which must be the same as the coins with usual legend. We see a small dot in the mint mark between AQ and PS, this point is a flaw, because I see a similar point in the field on the obverse. So there is originally no point in the mark.

Estimate based from the only known copy and sold 1450 € in XF state.

Same average diameter and weight as for the Arelate workshop. The diameter of 13.00 mm is fairly regular for often well rounded coins. The differences in diameter range from 12.00 mm to 14.00 mm.

The most common legend break, unlike the variant with the uninterrupted legend  that I found and that seems much rarer.

Board of styles

The reverse image of the board of style, comes from a restoration that I made from a coin with the mark C. That is the mark SMAQ P on S, this coin was sold by Classical Numismatic Group, link to the sale and their website: https://www.cngcoins.com/Coin.aspx?CoinID=163194. Below, the quote from their comment:

''From the Elliott-Kent Collection. Ex Classical Numismatic Group Electronic Auction 94 (21 July 2004), lot 198.

Though assigned to the first officina, a closer inspection of the mintmark reveals that the reverse die appears to have been made originally for the second officina, as an ‘S’ can be seen just below and to the right of the
«P.»''

Although the chosen image comes from a ''variant'' of the original type, this reverse is still in the category of visuals seen for the camp door of this mint. I chose this coin as the basis of illustration work because it is the best-preserved reverse showing this style of door for this type.

Modern fakes and coins very similar to Gallic imitation make me remove some coins from the list of to be anayzed.

Coins almost always in pitiful condition, generally sold around 100 Euros. The better preserved copies seem to show a style very close to an imitation. So I excluded them from my estimates.

Weight and diameter information based on information from other mints. Indeed, too few copies available and weight variations from less than 1.00 grs to more than 1.30 grs.

The only copies sold, to my knowledge, are in condition VG. Very rare mint! I only have the starting price information of those coins sold. No information on the final price achieved. Assuming that the coins of Flavius Victor are sought, are always selling more expensive than the starting prices and taking into account their great rarity, I estimated these coins at 200 €.

I discovered this variant with no legend break on the reverse, analyzing about 100 copies for the mint of Aquileia. A single copy seen with this variant of legend without break, which shows the rarity of this variant. Indeed, the coins of Flavius Victor are hard to find and it seems that 99% of the coins of this mint have the break of AYC # 4 (see above). While waiting to see another copy of this variant, I can not give information on the officina letter that is erased. Coin sold by Classical Numismatic Group, link to the sale and their website:http://https://www.cngcoins.com/Coin.aspx?CoinID=92457. Weight and diameter information of the only known copy. It seems obvious that this variant, if other copies are discovered, enter in the same weight and diameter as the AYC # 4.

Estimate based on the price realized with the only copy seen (in state VG).

Variant of the RIC 55b, here is the description given by Classical Numismatic Group concerning this coin:

''RIC IX 55b.1 (mintmark); cf. Paolucci 804 (same); cf. LRBC 1104 (same). Good VF, green patina. Exceptional for issue. Rare die error.

From the Elliott-Kent Collection. Ex Classical Numismatic Group Electronic Auction 94 (21 July 2004), lot 198.

Though assigned to the first officina, a closer inspection of the mintmark reveals that the reverse die appears to have been made originally for the second officina, as an ‘S’ can be seen just below and to the right of the ‘P.’  ''

Illustration from this described coin, sold by Classical Numismatic Group, CNG 84, lot 1572 (see other references just above), link to the sale and their website:https://www.cngcoins.com/Coin.aspx?CoinID=163194

Since this variant seems to be present on a single die and this kind of variant is very rare. Adding that at the moment it seems that only this copy is known, I gave an estimate based on the price realized when selling this coin.
