Hadrian

  • Emperor: 117 / 138.
  • Son of: Domitia Paulina.
  • Wife: Sabina.

Group 1: Group 1: The legends and the portrait correspond to an existing official type.

Group 2: A small mistake like a spear instead of a scepter. The rest of the coin perfectly follows the official coin. Or depreciated coin, but leaving parts showing that the coin seems to have the legends and the portrait corresponding to an existing official type.

Group 3: The existing official type is well imitated but contains one or more errors of legend, representation or degenerate style (excluding hybrid).

Group 4: The coin is a hybrid of two official types (obverse / reverse) and may also include legend errors. Or, the coin is known in another module or metal.

Small precision, peoples often describes the official type of reverse as being: '' Trajan laureate standing right and hadrian Laureate standing left hand giving ''. This is a mistake for me, because we see of all the official coins that the two characters hold an object (volumen?) In their left hand.

The type imitated is RIC 3 (c). However, as I noted above, the official type is poorly described. And this coin ''fourree'', shows us the Emperor on the left with both hands extended to the right. The imitator made the same mistake as the people describing this coin today by not seeing the objects held. Moreover instead of extending one hand as the official type, the character on the left tends both hands. Classical Numismatic Group has noted this change:

''Trajan and Hadrian standing vis-à-vis, Trajan is clasping the right hand of Hadrian with both of his hands''

I have classified this coin in group 3 because the obverse legend does not correspond to the legends associated with this reverse on the official coins. The legend does not appear to contain the letters OPT. The legend also ends with AVG and not AVG GER DAC. Part of the legend is impossible to read, IMP CAESAR is assumed but there appears to be one or more words between CAESAR and TRAIAN, which is also not present on the official type. TRAIAN seems to be followed by letters VS, another mistake. About the reverse side, we also assume that the legend must be PARTHIC DIVI TRAIAN AVG F P M TR P COS P P, but I have written ''? '' to the places that no longer allow to read the legend. Because, given the errors on the obverse, there is no indication that the reverse legend correctly follows the main type. The A of ADOPTIO is tilted as if he was following the beginning of the legend PARTHIC. It is not a hybrid because this type is known, including with this bust, but the visual of the reverse and (at least) the legend of the obverse include errors.

I classify this coin in the group 3 because even if it respects the legend and the bust (b) of the RIC 129, there are two errors with the exergue: LIBERAT AVV instead of LIBERAL AVG. Without this T in place of the L we could have classified this coin in the group 1. The V instead of the G looks like an inclined G but this one mistake, given the quality of the copy (except the style), would not be enough to downgrade this coin in group 3.

Variant of RIC 137 bust (c) with a bust seen three quarter back. Coin classified in group 4 because it does not seem that there is official coin with this bust orientation associated with this reverse. That said, nothing proves the opposite. The coin therefore perfectly copies the official type except for the orientation of the bust. However, if it can not be excluded that it has been copied on an official coin having the same bust, but not yet indexed; I note that this type of reverse exists on other denarii. But this bust also exists for Trajan. The legend is the same except: COS II and SALVS AVG (the reverse SALVS AVG also exists for Hadrian). What is interesting is that the obverse shows the bust of Trajan, draped and laureate on the right, seen from three quarters back as on this imitation. Link to the coin: https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=3300240. Was the copier influenced by a coin of Trajan or did he use as a model an obverse and a reverse of two different coins of Hadrian? The last hypothesis is the most likely. The coins of Trajan would have simply influenced the copier in the idea of seeing this bust associated with this reverse.

Neither the legend nor the bust seen from three quarter back are known on official coins associated with this reverse. It's a hybrid obverse / reverse. In addition, I note an error that seems not to have been recorded so far: TRAIANV instead of TRAIAN. The copied reverse is that of RIC 191. The association with this obverse is not known on the official listed coins. I observe that the legend of the obverse is for coins struck before 125, date from which this reverse appears. The information of weight and diameter are those of the two copies mentioned, the coin of Savoca Numismatik is 16.00 mm for 2.51 grs, that of cgb.fr is 18.00 mm for 2.34 grs.

I classify this coin in group 3, the type and the legend are known together on the official coins. Only the bust changes. Indeed it is the bust ''h'' of the RIC list, not known with this type of reverse. The imitated type (as pointed out by cgb.fr) is the RIC 241A (denarius). So it is a variant with the bust ''h''. Bust found on contemporary coins like the aureus with the reverse: IOVI VICTORI (RIC 251) or the denarius with the reverse: ROMA (RIC 262 A) .Another copy was listed by cgb.fr in 2009, link to the sale and their site:https://www.cgb.fr/hadrien-denier-fourre-ttb,v41_0530,a.html.

It is difficult for me to judge on photo with two damaged copies, but it seems that these two coins share the same dies. The reverses of both coins have the same die break before the F of FIDES. Even if I wonder if it can be a letter written in error which would not be surprising on this kind of coin. This explains why I noticed that the last P is in the drapery because for now I have listed this type of fourree only with these two dies.

Coin copied on RIC 302 as mentioned by Auktionshaus H. D. Rauch GmbH. I add that it is the bust (c) of the RIC list. So this is a variant of the official type (again, there may be the discovery of a similar official coin in the future) since this bust is not known with the reverse showing Germania looking right. I therefore classify it in group 4. I therefore classify it in group 4, this coin being probably copied on two different coins.

Hybrid currency as mentioned Auktionshaus H. D. Rauch GmbH, quote:

''Cf RIC 266 für Rv. (auch 370 und 376), RSC 1316 für Rv. (Prototypen). Interessante antike Imitation mit hybrider Stempelkoppelung.''

Given the legend of obverse and the type of reverse, the official coins closest to our imitation are:

-RIC 266 or RIC 376 (as mentioned by Auktionshaus H. D. Rauch GmbH) which are denarii. But, for the RIC 266, a bare and laureate bust with legend HADRIANVS AVG COS III P. For the RIC 376 the same bust but with the aegis and the legend HADRIANVS AVGVSTVS. Finally, the RIC 370 (Aureus) (also quoted by Auktionshaus H. D. Rauch GmbH) which is known with the same reverse, the same legends but a bust bareheaded and draped (bust (g) of the RIC list). And who is a hybrid struck in silver with, in addition, a variant of bust. So we have three possibilities. Even if we can always discover in the meantime, an official coin so far unlisted, sticking better or totally to this imitation. However (and this goes for other fourree hybrids) it is very likely that these coins are copied on two different coins, since we have, just for this emperor, fourree coins whose types are mostly hybrids. This makes a high probability rate that these coins remain (or at least for the most part) hybrids.
